The Homosexual Question
6 Questions To Consider
I entitled this as it is entitled because so many believers in Christ ask themselves the question, “Can you be gay and be a Christian?”. Hopefully, this will help you to navigate this question. There is likely no family out there today that doesn’t have at least one person who does not claim to be gay or lesbian. It is permeating our culture, so we need to be able to converse with others regarding this issue. We will start this conversation in the same exact way that we begin all these conversations.
1. Do you believe that the Bible is the God-breathed Word of God and that it is absolute truth?
This is always the starting point. If they answer yes, then you can have a healthy conversation. If they answer no, then you are arguing apples and oranges. It would be like sitting down at the table trying to rationalize with a member of Hamas. You would have nothing in common with the exception that you’re both breathing. If a so-called believer says they do not believe in the Bible or even that they do not believe all the Bible, then there is a question as to whether that person knows God at all. If I were in a conversation with someone and they answered “no” at this early point, then I would say, “I am happy to tell you why I believe what I believe if you want to hear my reasons.” If they say that they’re not interested, then you’re done. Dust off your shoes and move on.
If they say that they are a Christian and that they believe in the Word of God as absolute truth, then proceed with the following:
2. If you believe in the truth of Scripture, do you believe that God is a God of order?
From the very beginning of time, we learn that there is an order to creation. The first chapter in Scripture, Genesis 1, outlines the order of creation:
Day 1: God created light in the darkness and separated it from the darkness and called the light day and the darkness night.
Day 2: God created the sky by separating the waters of the sky from the waters of the earth.List item
Day 3: God created dry land, seas, plants and trees
Day 4: God created the sun, moon, and stars.
Day 5: God created sea creatures and flying creatures.
Day 6: God created land animals and He created human beings in His image.
Day 7: God rested on the Sabbath.
You really can’t get more ordered than this! The Apostle Paul in speaking to the church at Corinth in 1 Cor. 14 says, “For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace.” He was saying this in regard to people speaking in tongues without an interpreter. This act created chaos within the Corinthian church. God had established that this church and every church would have order and not chaos. Order gives us a sense of peace. If you are ever wondering if something is God’s will or not, know this, God’s will always promotes a sense of peace. There is no peace in the lgbtq community. The rate of suicide is 3x higher in the lgbtq community than it is in the heterosexual community. Suicide is a huge mental health challenge! Therefore, there is a lack of peace with those who consider themselves to be homosexual or who have same-sex attraction. This alone is proof that homosexuality is not of God.
3. Now that we’ve established that God is a God of order, would homosexuality within the Church promote order or chaos?
You don’t have to look very far to understand that all these evangelical denominations who have chosen to accept homosexual clergy and to accept and even celebrate the same-sex preference of its members are experiencing chaos and a lack of peace. Major denominations are splitting due to the lack of peace within. Anything that is of God will promote a sense of peace….not pride. Romans 8:6 says, “The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.” Nothing is more fleshly than the desire for a same sex partner that falls outside the order of God’s created order.
4. If homosexuality is not okay within the Church, is it okay outside the Church?
Anything that is of God can be open, transparent, and it will promote peace. If it is not sanctioned by God within the Church, then it is not sanctioned by God anywhere.
5. Why did God create male and female?
Gen. 1:27 says, “So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him, male and female He created them.” Adam and Eve were compliments of one another. They were not like each other. In Gen. 2, God explains how the animals were created to be able to produce offspring. Animals of the same sex cannot produce offspring. Only male and female of every living creature can produce offspring. This is God’s order. God went on to explain in Gen. 2:24, “Therefore, a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” A marriage between a man and a woman is the only union that will be able to reproduce human life. The New Testament also reiterates this in Matthew 19:4-5. Scripture tells us in Gen. 1:27 that one of God’s intentions for marriage is to “be fruitful and multiply”. Same sex couples cannot follow through on this mandate. God is the Designer of society. When a society moves away from the order of the Master Designer, that society becomes one of chaos and the population cannot grow
6. Can a person control his/her sexual attraction? Isn’t a person’s sexual attraction kind of like being born with blue eyes or being born short or tall?
In other words, aren’t people with same sex attraction born like that?
The great deception of our day is to declare that one is born homosexual and can do nothing about that. However, Scripture never says anything regarding changing one’s inherent physical traits. But the Bible does say repeatedly that homosexual activity is a sin and that those who engage in that behavior will not inherit the kingdom of heaven. Read about Sodom and Gomorrah in Gen. 19. An entire area was completely demolished because of all the same-sex relationships in that area. Lev. 18:22, Lev. 20:13, Rom. 1:26-27, 1 Cor. 6:9, and 1 Tim. 1:10 all characterize homosexual relationships as sin. If God tells me something is a sin and I want to do it differently, then I am abandoning God’s Word for what I feel. If God tells me to do something different from what I feel like I want to do, then obviously, He will give me the power and strength to do it. I may not want to forgive someone who has terribly wronged me. But God says to forgive. I have to trust God to help me to forgive. If a person has same-sex attraction and feels powerless, then that individual must trust God to give him/her the power and strength to overcome this feeling. 1 Cor. 6:11 gives those with same-sex attraction hope by telling them that some might have those feelings prior to conversion, but after being saved, they are “washed, sanctified and justified in the name of Jesus Christ.” There is always hope if a person turns these feelings over to God. 1 John 3:20 tells us, “For if our hearts condemn us, God is greater than our hearts, and He knows everything.”. In other words, God is bigger than your feelings!
7. Can a person with same-sex attraction help himself/herself?
1 Cor. 10:13 “No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.” That old saying that God will not put more on you than you can handle is a lie. This verse tells us that there may be a lot of things that come upon us that we cannot handle, but there is NOTHING that can come upon us that we cannot handle with the help of our faithful God!
8. Is it wrong to celebrate Pride Month?
Pride is a cardinal sin. There is a pride that is self-centered. God hates this kind of pride and it keeps us from being able to have a relationship with Him. Proverbs 16:18 tells us “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” Is. 14 and Ez. 28 spell out the sin of Satan…pride. Not only should we not celebrate Pride month during the month of June, we should contend for our faith and condemn this. It is by no mistake that the lgbtq community chose June to be their month. The Roman goddess, Juno, is known as the goddess of women, marriage, and childbirth. We get the name of our 6th month, June, from this Roman goddess. June has always been the “wedding” month and now the lgbtq community has stolen this month for their own. Choosing not to celebrate this month as Pride month and condemn it as such does not make you a hater. It makes you faithful to the Word of God.
