This week, we’ll study the famous “writing on the wall” and we’ll see the kingdom of Babylon overtaken by the Medes and the Persians. Last week, we learned about King Nebuchadnezzar’s 7-year “come to Jesus” discipline by God. After Nebuchadnezzar died in 562 BC, his sons and son in laws each took a turn on the throne. The Babylonian kingdom was overthrown in 539 BC, during the reign of Nabonidus who was married to Nebuchadnezzar’s daughter. However, he was rarely ever in Babylon. His son, Belshazzar sat on the throne in his absence. When we begin Chapter 5, Daniel is getting to be an old man. Read Dan. 5:1. What was going on?
By the time we get to Belshazzar, there had already been a few kings. Nebuchadnezzar is referred to in Daniel 5 as “the father of Belshazzar”. It is common to refer to any ancestor as the father.
