Zechariah - Lesson 1
Excerpt
Welcome to the book of Zechariah! And oh, what a book it is! By the time you get to the end of chapter 2, you will understand the picture above. Many Bible teachers refer to this book as the Revelation of the Old Testament. For those of you who have done a study of the book of Revelation, you will understand this sentiment by the time we reach the end of Chapter 14. I have always loved the Old Testament books because so many of them read like an ongoing story. The book of Zechariah is not like that. It is apocalyptic in nature and has a lot of imagery that might seem wild and fanciful. Because of this, it can seem very confusing to those who study it. Apocalyptic prophecy paints images with words. Therefore, it is like a picture book. The last half of the book of Daniel was apocalyptic. We must remember that the Bible was written by men under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. When strange things of a far distant future nature were shown to them, the only way they could communicate it to us was by painting images with words. Imagine how the ancient Jews would have explained cars or televisions or computers. Buckle up! We’re going to study about red horses, flying scrolls, sprouting lampstands and bronze mountains!
