Genesis - Lesson 16

In our last session, we learned that the first of our great patriarchs, Abraham, is gone. Read Gen. 25:9- 34. The last time we saw Isaac and Ishmael together was back in Chapter 21 when Ishmael was making fun of Isaac and Sarah had Ismael and his mother, Hagar sent away. Now, these brothers are reunited to bury their father. We don’t know how they got along with one another, only that they buried Abraham in the same cave that Sarah was buried in. What cave was that?

What did God do after the death of Abraham? (v. 11)

You will find as you go through the book of Genesis that the concept of “the blessing” is powerful and lasting. We will see the remaining patriarchs pass the blessing from one generation to the next. But here, God is the One doing the blessing. All the covenant blessings that God gave to Abraham now fall into the seat of his son, Isaac. And if you remember that pitiful scene with Ishmael and Hagar dying of thirst in the wilderness, God pronounced a blessing on him as well. He was to be the father of many nations and in the next few verses, we see this. Below is Abraham’s family tree again, but this time we see the sons of Ishmael and the sons of Jacob and Esau.

How old was Ishmael when he died?

The same thing is said about Ishmael at his death as was said about Abraham at his death. What was it?
